Getting to and from Zakynthos Airport
Zakynthos is one of the few Greek holiday airports with no public transport at all. The KTEL buses run along the main road at Kalamaki, a 15-minute walk away with no pavement for part of it, and the airport has never been on their route. In practice every arrival leaves by coach transfer, taxi, pre-booked car or hire car, and the good news is that nothing is far: Laganas and Kalamaki are ten minutes, the town 10–15, Tsilivi 20 and the north-coast resorts 30–40.
Package holidays, most of the island’s traffic, include a coach. Independent travellers should pre-book a transfer for anywhere beyond Laganas and Kalamaki: the taxi fleet is small, and on Saturday and Tuesday changeover days the rank empties.
Taxi from Zakynthos Airport
The rank is outside arrivals, with the tariffs to each resort fixed by the local taxi association and posted on a board; the night tariff applies after midnight. Radio taxi: +30 26950 48400. No airport bus, and the walk to Kalamaki
The KTEL buses between Zakynthos Town and Laganas pass along the main road at Kalamaki, about 15 minutes on foot from the terminal, and there is no service into the airport itself. The walk is flat but partly without a pavement and unpleasant with suitcases; it suits a backpacker with time, nobody else. Anyone staying in Kalamaki can simply walk to the hotel, which is closer than the bus stop.
Coach and pre-booked transfers
Coaches meet every package flight and the forecourt is a car park of them on changeover days. Independent travellers can pre-book a private transfer for roughly the taxi tariff, with the driver inside arrivals; for Tsilivi, Alykes, Vassilikos and the villas of the north it is the only arrangement that does not depend on the size of the rank queue. Ferry travellers to Kefalonia leave from Agios Nikolaos in the far north (an hour) and to the mainland from Zakynthos Town port.
